about
This song is based on Revolutionary Girl Utena, an anime series from 1997. As a child, Utena was deeply impressed by a meeting with a prince from an unknown land. She now desires both to find him again and also to become a prince herself. Through dealings with a mysterious group of fellow students including a girl called The Rose Bride, she must decide what it means to be a prince and what it is to love.
Spiraling stairs mark the way of the rose
Where hearts fight the battles of love
See the dark princess presiding in red
And the castle that shines from above
One is the siren, the other is home
But take care, there is more than you see
Remember your promise, oh child of the grave
Make your choice carefully
Kindness betrayed you and set you against
The ones who abuse and control
And yet it repaid with so precious a friend
A kindred and complement soul
Though she is your joy and your reason to be,
You are shying away from the word
Yes, love isn't always so simple a thing
Do you know, have you heard?
When stars are just lights on the ceiling
And when that something eternal is found
Though purring of engines should call you away
Don't ever give in to the sound
Prince, will you bring revolution and pierce
The shell of the world with a sword?
A chorus of shadows tells riddles and warns
Of fate and the hero's reward
Your signet has carried you many a year
Do you so lightly throw it aside?
Defend the white rose, and so vanquish the pain
That imprisons your bride
When stars are just lights on the ceiling
And when that something eternal is found
Though purring of engines should call you away
Don't ever give in to the sound
